Three more positive COVID-19 cases reported by UK athletics department

Two more University of Kentucky athletes, as well as an athletics staff member deemed essential to workouts, tested positive for active COVID-19 infections as part of the school’s initial screening process for return to activity.

The names of the individuals were not disclosed, nor were the specific teams of which they are members, as part of an update on its procedures Monday. The latest round of tests included the return of 60 athletes since the school’s last update on July 13, and those returnees hailed from several sports: football, men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, volleyball and swimming and diving.

In addition to the active cases, three of the 60 athletes tested since the last update were positive for COVID-19 antibodies. A total of 25 returning staffers were subject to the initial screening test in the last two weeks; the one positive result originated from that group.

Three positive cases were reported by UK as part of its update on July 13. A UK spokesperson said the athletic department could not discuss those cases — including whether the individuals had been cleared to return — in order to comply with HIPAA regulations.

Individuals who test positive for active infections are required to quarantine in accordance with CDC and local health department guidelines. The school has said that it will continue to evaluate the need for additional testing. UK told the Herald-Leader that it has administered tests for active COVID-19 cases beyond the initial screening procedure but declined to provide specifics as to why or the numbers thereof, citing HIPAA.
