Former Kentucky star Lynn Bowden traded a week before NFL season kicks off
Lynn Bowden won’t play for the Las Vegas Raiders this season after all.
The team traded Bowden to the Miami Dolphins along with a sixth-round pick for a fourth-round pick in next year’s draft. That pick was originally owned by the Raiders; they traded it to the Dolphins as part of a deal for Raekwon McMillan in late August.
Bowden, a Kentucky standout who won the 2019 Paul Hornung Award after taking over as the Wildcats’ quarterback halfway through the season, was the No. 80 overall pick in this year’s draft.
As a junior, Bowden rushed for 1,468 yards and 13 touchdowns and finished in the top five nationally in all-purpose yards. He was 6-2 as a starting quarterback.
Las Vegas planned to use Bowden primarily as a running back. Miami listed him as a wide receiver.
Miami was high on Bowden ahead of the draft. According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins invited him to team headquarters for one of their 30 permitted draft prospect visits before the league canceled those visits due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They later arranged a video-conference session with him.
The Dolphins selected Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in April’s draft. Four of their additional selections also hailed from the Southeastern Conference: cornerback Noah Igbinoghene (Auburn), defensive tackle Raekwon Davis (Alabama), guard Solomin Kindley (Georgia) and center Blake Ferguson (LSU).
Miami is scheduled to kick off its 2020 season against the New England Patriots next Sunday.
