One of the top players in Kentucky signed with an unlikely school on Wednesday, college football’s traditional national signing day.

Treyveon Longmire, a four-star prospect according to 247Sports, has signed with Eastern Kentucky, becoming the Colonels’ highest-rated prospect in the internet recruiting era. The Corbin High School standout joins five other in-state players who made it official with EKU as part of a 10-member class during the December signing period.

Longmire originally was committed to the University of Kentucky but he de-committed from the Wildcats on Dec. 3, about two weeks prior to the start of the early period. During his recruitment he reported offers from more than a dozen FBS programs — among them Arkansas, Cincinnati, Louisville, Michigan and Tennessee — but he ultimately landed with an FCS school located about an hour north of his hometown.

“Treyveon is a great addition to us and completes what we feel is a very strong recruiting class,” head coach Walt Wells said in a news release. “He’s an outstanding athlete and we’re excited to have him become a Colonel.”

Longmire as a senior finished with 475 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on offense and an interception on defense. He helped lead the Redhounds to the region finals each of the last two seasons and was part of their 2018 state finals team as a freshman; he scored one of their three touchdowns in a 20-19 loss to Central, a thriller decided in the final seconds.

Kentucky haul

Other Kentuckians who signed with EKU this recruiting cycle were:

Kellen Bowen, LaRue County: A 6-foot-5 linebacker who recorded 67 tackles, 12 for a loss, and six sacks as a senior. He also led the Eagles in receiving (525 yards, three TDs on 36 receptions) and was their second-leading rusher (465 yards, six TDs on 80 carries).

Cameron Hergott, Beechwood: Kentucky’s 2020 Mr. Football winner returned for a “super senior” season and won a third state title as the Tigers’ starting quarterback. In his career he threw for 8,537 yards and 97 touchdowns while rushing for 4,197 yards and 63 touchdowns, setting multiple Beechwood records in the process.

Anthony Johns, Lexington Christian Academy: The 6-foot-1, 285-pound offensive lineman helped lead LCA to consecutive appearances in the Class 2A state finals. The Eagles’ offense was the highest scoring in the state last season, putting up 46.9 points per game.

Jeremiah Lightfoot, Bowling Green: Was part of the Purples’ 2020 state championship run as a junior. Lightfoot, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive lineman, had 71 tackles (17 for a loss, four sacks), an interception, a fumble recovery and scored two rushing touchdowns as a senior.

Matthew Napier, UK: EKU head coach Walt Wells is familiar with Napier, whom he helped coach while he was a quality control assistant with the Wildcats. Napier, a 6-foot-6, 343-pound offensive lineman who played in games against UT Martin (2019) and Florida (2020) while at Kentucky, could play up to two years with the Colonels after spending four seasons in Lexington. He played at East Jessamine High School.
