Kentucky football player Rahsaan Lewis charged with DUI, reckless driving
University of Kentucky football player Rahsaan Lewis was charged with a DUI following an arrest Sunday morning in downtown Lexington.
Lewis, a senior at the school, was pulled over by a Lexington police officer at 535 S. Upper Street at 2:58 a.m. Sunday, according to an arrest citation filed by the city police department. According to the citation, Lewis showed signs of impairment during a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol concentration of .153, nearly double the legal limit.
Lewis was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, improper start from a parked position and reckless driving. He was arraigned Monday and has a pretrial conference scheduled for April 22.
“We are aware of the incident and we will continue to monitor the situation as it develops,” UK athletics department spokesperson Susan Lax told the Herald-Leader.
A police officer first observed Lewis’ vehicle at the intersection of High Street and South Upper Street, about three city blocks from where he was stopped. Both Lewis and the officer were stopped at the same red light. As the light turned green, Lewis began moving his vehicle when movement of the vehicle was not reasonably safe, according to the citation. “The subject accelerated his vehicle so fast, it created a burnout with the tires, making a high pitched squealing noise,” the citation reads. It says that Lewis failed to operate his vehicle in a “careful manner” with regard for the safety and convenience of pedestrians and other vehicles.
The officer believed Lewis was driving about 65 miles per hour on a 35-mph street, and Lewis upon being stopped admitted knowledge of the speed limit and that he was “possibly” driving 60 to 65 miles per hour, according to the citation.
Lewis is the son of NFL Hall of Famer Ray Lewis. He is a walk-on wide receiver who has spent the last two seasons at UK. He played in six games last season, recording two catches and returning a punt, but he missed the other seven games due to a knee injury. Lewis has been practicing with the team this spring and was observed going through individual and team drills during a practice that was open to local media members on Tuesday.
