Former Kentucky football coach Hal Mumme arrested for trespassing at Lexington hotel
Former University of Kentucky football head coach Hal Mumme was arrested early Friday morning in downtown Lexington.
Mumme, 70, was charged with second-degree criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, following an incident alleged to have occurred at the address of the Hyatt Regency hotel downtown at 12:24 a.m.
According to an arrest citation, officers asked Mumme to leave the building multiple times and he refused. Mumme later allegedly used “physical force and violence” against an officer who attempted to arrest him.
Mumme appeared in Fayette district court via video on Friday afternoon, according to Herald-Leader reporting partner WKYT. He pleaded guilty to both charges and was credited with time served. The judge also waived Mumme’s court costs, according to the report.
Mumme was UK’s head coach from 1997-2000. He led the Wildcats to bowls, the Outback Bowl and Music City Bowl, in consecutive years and coached Tim Couch, the program’s only No. 1 pick in NFL Draft history. Mumme is recognized as one of progenitors of the air raid offense.
UK during the 2000 season went 2-9 while in the midst of an NCAA investigation. Mumme resigned in 2001 after the program was found guilty of multiple NCAA rules violations, including payments to recruits. Mumme finished 20-26 as UK’s head coach.
Most recently, Mumme was head coach of the Linemen in The Spring League, an experimental developmental and scouting showcase.
