Former UK football player James Withrow dies

Lexington — A former University of Kentucky and NFL football player died Sunday at age 65.

James Calvin “Cal” Withrow was born July 4, 1945, in Portsmouth, Ohio, to Calvin and Jeanette Withrow. After attending high school in Kettering, Ohio, Withrow went to college at UK and played center on the football team from 1963 to 1966.

In his professional football career, spanning 1970-74, Withrow played three seasons as a center with the Green Bay Packers and one season each with the San Diego Chargers and St. Louis ­Cardinals. He played 42 games with the Packers and a total of 58 games in his five NFL seasons.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Withrow; a daughter, Heather Withrow of San Diego; a son, ­Jason Withrow of Lexington; a brother, Bob ­Withrow of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister, Beverly Stoll of Seattle. A memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Clark Legacy Center in Brannon Crossing. A gathering of family and friends will follow from 6 to 9 p.m. Donations may be made in Withrow’s memory to the National MS Society or Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
