Is Kentucky on the verge of landing another basketball recruit for next season?
Kentucky is expected to get another basketball commitment for next season by the end of this weekend.
Pittsburgh-area star Adou Thiero — a 6-foot-5 combo guard in the 2022 class — recently wrapped up his official visit to UK, and he announced shortly after that trip that he would reveal his college decision Sunday. Thiero is the son of Almamy Thiero, who played for John Calipari at Memphis, and the UK coach has been keeping tabs on the young prospect in recent weeks.
Calipari watched Thiero in the Pennsylvania state title game in late March, then returned to the area a couple of days later for an in-home visit with the high school senior and his family. Thiero announced after that meeting that he had an offer to play for the Wildcats next season.
247Sports analyst Travis Branham logged a Crystal Ball prediction in favor of Kentucky on Thiero’s page Monday morning, the day after he announced his commitment date. Branham put a “high” amount of confidence on that pick.
Thiero has also taken official visits to Maryland and Xavier in recent weeks, as well as an unofficial visit to Pittsburgh, his hometown school. Indiana also hosted Thiero for a recruiting trip during the season.
Kentucky is still looking for scholarship players for next season, especially in the backcourt, which has already lost Kellan Grady, TyTy Washington and Davion Mintz from last season’s team. Projected lottery pick Shaedon Sharpe is also widely expected to keep his name in the NBA Draft.
Thiero averaged 23.2 points, 10.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 3.9 steals per game this past season, and he could provide depth at the guard spot while bringing some upside for future rosters.
UK’s projected backcourt for next season includes returning starting point guard Sahvir Wheeler, five-star combo guard recruit Cason Wallace, and shooting guards CJ Fredrick and Antonio Reeves.
