The top-ranked high school boys basketball player in the 2026 class is continuing his recruiting process.
Tyran Stokes — the 6-foot-7 small forward who is originally from Louisville — is yet to decide on his college home.
Stokes, whose recruitment is perceived to be a battle between Kansas and Kentucky, didn’t discuss his college plans Monday during media day for the McDonald’s All-American Game.
Instead, Stokes — who is one of 24 players selected to play in the boys basketball showcase Tuesday night — provided a moment of introspection.
Stokes’ drawn-out college recruitment has allowed for plenty of speculation about the 18-year-old, including online critique of his demeanor both on and off the court.
On Monday, Stokes — who began his senior year of high school at Notre Dame in Los Angeles before transferring to Rainier Beach in Seattle — said he’s hoping to demonstrate his maturation.
“Trying to show that what people see on the court isn’t really true. Just showing the type of character that I have isn’t what people hear. It’s pretty different,” Stokes said. “Just showing what type of kid I can be and also just being as coachable as I can be.”
Stokes said he’s aware of the perception that he may be “an arrogant kid” or unreceptive to coaching.
“For me, I hear it. I use it as motivation to keep pushing me to work hard, keep pushing me to do better at those things,” Stokes said. “If people believe those things to be true, I want to prove them wrong. So, if I can work on that to prove them wrong, that’s what I want.”
Stokes’ basketball talent is unquestioned.
The consensus top prospect in the 2026 class, Stokes’ blend of strength, skill and passing ability has led to a decorated prep basketball career.
But it’s still unclear where Stokes will spend what’s expected to be a one-and-done season of college ball.
The two schools considered to be leading Stokes’ recruitment, Kansas and Kentucky, are in the midst of intrigue-filled offseasons.
Kansas is coming off a 24-11 season in which Bill Self’s team rostered star guard Darryn Peterson, who was last year’s top high school recruit, according to 247Sports. Kansas only reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, though, and there’s uncertainty about whether Self will return as coach.
Self, who has led the Jayhawks since 2003, said after Kansas’ season-ending loss to St. John’s that he hadn’t yet decided if he’d return for a 24th season with the program. He denied a report last week that he had opted to retire.
Kentucky, meanwhile, seemed to be close to a commitment from Stokes last fall, but that never materialized.
UK is coming off a disappointing season, especially relative to preseason expectations. Mark Pope’s program spent big but exited the NCAA Tournament in the second round.
There’s also been a significant shakeup at UK with regard to Stokes’ recruitment. Kentucky’s top recruiter for Stokes was assistant coach Jason Hart, who is leaving UK after two seasons on Pope’s staff to become the associate head coach at SMU.
Even without Hart in the picture, Kentucky expects to be a top contender for Stokes, who visited Lexington this past summer.
Oregon was also listed as a finalist when Stokes announced his top three schools in November. Recently, schools such as Arkansas and Washington have received buzz as Stokes’ recruitment evolves.
What’s the latest in Tyran Stokes’ recruitment?
Stokes is a key part of Kentucky’s efforts to rebuild its roster this offseason.
So far, the Cats have three confirmed outgoing players and only one incoming player. UK’s top two scorers this season — senior guards Denzel Aberdeen and Otega Oweh — are out of college eligibility. Junior guard Jaland Lowe, who only played in nine games due to injury, has announced his intent to enter the transfer portal when it officially opens April 7.
Sophomore forward Jayden Quaintance is expected to leave for the NBA draft.
So far, Kentucky’s lone roster add of the offseason was last week’s high school commitment from Mason Williams, a four-star point guard. Williams is UK’s only class of 2026 commitment.
While the Cats have swung and missed on several top prospects in this year’s high school senior class, securing a pledge from Stokes would be viewed as a major coup.
Stokes would be the highest-ranked high school prospect ever to commit to Pope in his 11 years as a college head coach. The last time UK landed the top prospect in a high school recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite, was in 2015, when Skal Labissiere chose John Calipari’s Cats.
Will Stokes be coming to Lexington?
We’re going to have to wait on that answer.
On Friday, On3 reported Stokes could make his college commitment Tuesday as part of the McDonald’s All-American Game festivities. By Monday morning, an update from On3 said Stokes is unlikely to commit Tuesday but may do so next week.
It’s the latest twist in a recruitment full of them.
In a weekend interview with 247Sports, Stokes declined to name a leader in his recruitment.
“I wouldn’t call it a race. I wouldn’t say someone is ahead of anyone,” Stokes told 247Sports. “But I talk to some coaches more than I talk to others, I’ll say that. I’m not going say any names but there are some schools that I still have a relationship with and I still like those coaches or whatever, but I might not just be all the way in.”
Stokes is one of three boys players at the McDonald’s All-American Game yet to commit to a college.
The others are four-star point guard Darius Bivins and five-star guard Brandon McCoy. Kentucky has extended a scholarship offer to McCoy, but the Cats aren’t expected to be a factor in his recruitment.
The boys McDonald’s All-American Game is set for 9 p.m. Tuesday at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
“It’s a blessing to be named a McDonald’s All-American. It’s just a dream that I’ve had as a kid growing up,” Stokes said. “Being able to be a part of a historic event like this and being able to play with and against great players... Just being able to go out there and show that I can compete with the best.”
At 7 p.m., ESPN will broadcast the girls McDonald’s All-American Game from the same venue. Three participants in that contest — point guard Maddyn Greenway, guard Emily McDonald and forward Savannah Swords — are signed to play for the UK women’s basketball team next season.
