Kentucky signee Labissiere is ranked nation's No. 1 player
University of Kentucky signee Skal Labissiere has been named the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2015 by Rivals.com, which posted its final rankings Wednesday.
Labissiere — a 7-footer from Haiti now living in the Memphis area — wowed scouts and recruiting analysts during the recent all-star circuit with his versatile and ever-evolving game. He signed with Kentucky in November.
He is John Calipari’s first No. 1 recruit in the Rivals.com rankings since John Wall signed with the Wildcats in 2009. Former UK players Anthony Davis, Nerlens Noel and Julius Randle were all ranked No. 2 in the final Rivals rankings in their respective classes.
UK’s other two signees for the class of 2015 also made the Rivals top 50. New Jersey point guard Isaiah Briscoe was listed at No. 10 and Chicago shooting guard Charles Matthews was ranked No. 48.
Calipari is targeting five more uncommitted players from the top 10: No. 3 Jaylen Brown, No. 4 Brandon Ingram, No. 5 Cheick Diallo, No. 8 Malik Newman and No. 9 Thon Maker.
The other committed players in the top 10 are LSU’s Ben Simmons (No. 2), Maryland’s Diamond Stone (No. 6) and California’s Ivan Rabb (No. 7).
Future Duke point guard Derryck Thornton, who announced Tuesday that he would reclassify and play for the Blue Devils next season, debuted at No. 14 in the class of 2015 rankings.
Louisville signee Ray Spalding (No. 63) and Vanderbilt signee Camron Justice (No. 122) are the only Kentuckians in the final Rivals 150.
U of L also has commitments from Donovan Mitchell (No. 31) and Deng Adel (No. 47).
