Kentucky basketball recruit Reed Sheppard has just two regular-season games remaining in his junior campaign before all attention turns to the tournaments and a bid for a trip to Rupp Arena and the Sweet Sixteen.

Sheppard, who announced his commitment to UK just before the start of the season, is averaging 24.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, making 39.2 percent of his three-pointers and 90.2 percent of his free throws. He’s putting up those scoring totals despite being the intense focus of opposing defenses, and, most importantly, he’s leading his team to victories.

North Laurel takes a 21-5 record and 8-0 region mark into Tuesday’s game against Knox Central, the team that defeated Sheppard’s squad in the 13th Region finals last season. North Laurel is No. 4 in this week’s state rankings, despite losing to now-No. 3 Covington Catholic over the weekend. Knox Central is ranked No. 19 in the state.

Sheppard and North Laurel’s regular-season finale will be Friday at Corbin, and then it’ll be on to the district and region tournaments, and, perhaps, an appearance in Rupp for the Sweet Sixteen.
