Eastern Kentucky student’s half-court shot for a car
Eastern Kentucky’s basketball season opener against Marshall might not have worked out for the Colonels on Wednesday night, but one student drove away with a new car after he nailed a half-court shot during one of the first-half breaks.
Sameel Patel, a criminal justice major from London, launched a leaning jumper from a step behind the center line and watched as it hit the backboard right at the top edge of the square and banked home for the prize winner. The make sent Patel leaping around the court in front of 5,189 screaming fans who came out for first-year head coach A.W. Hamilton’s debut.
The basket earned Patel a new Ford EcoSport courtesy of Madison County Ford and put him at No. 8 on ESPN “SportsCenter’s “ top-10 plays.
Another fan, William Johnson, made a three-point shot to win a 65-inch 4K TV from Pieratt’s, but the three-quarter court shot for $40,000 by a third fan missed, EKU said.
The Colonels suffered a 105-77 loss to a Marshal team picked to finish second in Conference USA this season. The Herd were coming off a Conference USA Tournament title and a round-of-32 appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season.
