College basketball notes: Recruits' talks with Bob Knight questioned
Lamar is looking into whether new basketball coach Pat Knight violated an NCAA rule by allowing two recruits to speak with his father, former Indiana coach Bob Knight.
The Indianapolis Star reported that Indiana high school players Donnell Minton and Jason Smith, who both orally committed to Lamar, talked with Bob Knight by phone during a recent campus visit to the Texas school. Pat Knight, who played for his father at Indiana in the early 1990s, was hired by Lamar in April after he was fired by Texas Tech.
Kansas tied atop Big 12
Kansas lost six key players from last year's squad, and three of its highly recruited freshmen are ineligible. Eight scholarship players are dressing to practice in Allen Fieldhouse. Still, the Big 12's coaches on Thursday picked the Jayhawks and Texas A&M as co-favorites to win the league.
"I used to think coaches knew more about basketball than the media, but now I'm not so sure," Self quipped Thursday at Big 12 media day.
Auriemma sounds off
Connecticut women's coach Geno Auriemma says that the Big East's realignment problems could have been solved years ago with one simple move — Notre Dame's football team joining the league.
"They've been in our league 17 years, so how long are we going to date before we just decide this ain't working. And I'm not happy about it," Auriemma said Thursday.
The Irish, featuring Lexington Catholic graduate Natalie Novosel, are the coaches' favorite to win the Big East regular-season title, the first time since 2005 UConn wasn't the top pick.
Cal coach out of hospital
California men's coach Mike Montgomery, 64, was discharged from a hospital after undergoing surgery Wednesday that will keep him away from the team for a short recovery period ahead of his fourth season in charge. Cal provided no details about the coach's condition.
