College basketball: Morehead knocks off Belmont; West Virginia routs TCU
Tennessee State 79, Eastern Kentucky 78: Tahjere McCall scored 22 points as Tennessee State held on in the final seconds.
The Tigers (18-7, 9-3 Ohio Valley) led by three with six seconds remaining when Eastern Kentucky’s Jarelle Reischel made a tip shot to make it 79-78. A steal by Eastern Kentucky’s Isaac McGlone at the other end gave the Colonels (14-14, 5-8) one more chance to score but Reischel missed two consecutive shots as time expired.
Ja'Mill Powell scored 25 points for the Colonels. Reischel finished with 13.
EKU made 42 percent (13-of-31) of its three-point attempts, but shot just 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field for the game.
Morehead State 78, Belmont 77: Brent Arrington had 24 points and Anthony Elechi made two free throws with 13.8 seconds left Saturday as Morehead State rallied for a win at home over Ohio Valley Conference leader Belmont. Craig Bradshaw, who led Belmont with 28 points, missed a contested jumper at the buzzer.
Former Lexington Christian standout Taylor Barnette was 4-for-8 from three-point range and finished with 12 points and two rebounds for Belmont.
Belmont led 43-29 at halftime but went without a field goal for 10 minutes in the second half. The Eagles went on a 15-0 run, taking a 61-59 lead on a layup by Elechi.
Bradshaw tied it at 75 at 1:07, was fouled and missed the free throw but Elechi stumbled out of bounds with the rebound. On the inbounds, Bradshaw broke free to score.
After an Arrington free throw, Bradshaw missed a 3 and Elechi was fouled rebounding an Arrington miss.
DeJuan Marrero had a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles (14-11, 8-5), who lost by six at Belmont nine days earlier. Evan Bradds had 16 points for Belmont (18-9, 10-3) and Austin Luke had 13 assists but no points.
Georgetown 81, Cumberland 74: Lexington native Jordan Green (Henry Clay) had a career-high 19 points and Noah Cottrill came to life in the final six minutes as Georgetown thwarted the upset attempt. The No. 2 Tigers (23-3, 11-3) had to rally from a nine-point halftime deficit. Green had five of the first nine points in the second half.
Defiance 96, Transylvania 72: Junior guard Alex Jones scored his 1,000th career point in the loss. He had a team-high 28 points while handing out four assists.
LSU 76, No. 15 Texas A&M 71: Ben Simmons had 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, and LSU handed the visiting Aggies their fourth straight loss. Craig Victor scored 16 points and Keith Hornsby added 15 for the Tigers (16-9, 9-3 Southeastern Conference), who remained tied atop the SEC standings with Kentucky.
No. 10 West Virginia 73, TCU 42: Jonathan Holton returned from a suspension to lead four West Virginia players in double figures with 14 points for the Mountaineers in Morgantown, W.Va. Former Perry County Central star Jaysean Paige added 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists for West Virginia.
UIC 79, Northern Kentucky 77: A Cole Murray three and Drew McDonald layup made it a one-point game with 27 seconds to play. It was NKU’s ball with 11.8 seconds left but the Norse could not find the net on the final possession. Tyler White poured in 21 points after netting 17 points in the second half.
Cumberlands 72, Campbellsville 69: Cumberlands was led in the game by Tre Boutilier with his fifth double-double of the season, 16 points and 11 rebounds. D’Lando Carter added 15 points and five rebounds in the win.
Union 79, Bluefield 75: J.D. Tucker paced Union with 20 points, going 9-for-10 from the foul line to extend an 11-game win streak Gerrard Newby was the only other Bulldog in double figures, finishing with 16 points. Both teams shot 45.5 percent from the field, making an identical 25-of-55.
Shawnee State 56, Lindsey Wilson 55: The Blue Raiders trailed by one with seven seconds remaining, but a last-second corner three by D.J. Lambert was blocked. The Blue Raiders were led by Hannes Erhardt, who scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Western Carolina 76, Samford 71: Samford was led by Christen Cunningham (Henry Clay) with a career-high 27 points. Cunningham was 7 of 15 from the floor and sank all 13 free-throw attempts.
Alabama 61, Florida 55: Retin Obasohan scored 15 points, Jimmy Taylor added 11 and Alabama beat Florida for the first time in its last 12 tries.
Mississippi 76, Arkansas 60: Stefan Moody scored 17 points, Tomasz Gielo added 15 and Ole Miss climbed out of an early double-digit hole at home.
Missouri 75, Tennessee 64: Missouri’s Ryan Rosburg scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds to help snap a nine-game losing streak.
Vanderbilt 86, Auburn 57: Damian Jones helped stake Vanderbilt to a double-digit first-half lead and finished with 17 points and nine rebounds in road win.
No. 6 Kansas 76, No. 3 Oklahoma 72: Devonte' Graham scored a career-high 27 points, sinking 6 of 9 three-point attempts for the Jayhawks, who swept the regular-season series.
No. 5 Xavier 74, Butler 57: J.P Macura scored 13 points while Remy Abell and Edmond Sumner each had 12. The Musketeers won for the sixth time in seven games and retained sole possession of second place in the Big East.
Women’s games
Georgetown 50, Cumberland 46: Georgetown 22 turnovers for the game but limited the Cumberland offense, which had been averaging 63 points per game. The Tigers used a balanced attack with no one scoring in the double digits. Jessica Foster and Emilie Ziese each had nine points, while Lydia Graves and Ashli Mayes had seven each.
Transylvania 77, Defiance 67: Transylvania had four players reach double figures as it fought back from a first-half deficit. Katelyn Smith's 23 points gave her sole position of Transylvania's all-time scoring record. Coming into today, Smith needed 21 points to surpass the previous record of 1,920 points. Coach Juli Fulks earned her 200th career win as a head coach.
Eastern Kentucky 78, Tennessee State 67: Eastern used a 17-5 run at the end of the first quarter to help propel them to the win. Michaela Hunter led EKU’s scoring, pouring in 17 points while dishing out a game-high four assists. Jalen O’Bannon also chipped in 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to record her OVC-best 13th double-double of the season. Five Colonels scored in double figures.
Thomas More 88, Washington & Jefferson 57: Senior Sydney Moss (Boone County) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 25 point and 11 rebounds. The Saints remain undefeated at 22-0.
Pikeville 83, St. Catharine 50: Devin Conley led all scorers with 21 points, sinking four three-pointers, and Kelah Eldridge, Aundrea Matchen and Kandice Porter chipped in with 12 points each for UPike. It was a 22-point game at halftime and the Bears’ largest margin came in the final minute at 35.
Cumberlands 60, Campbellsville 56: The Patriots gave up the lead only once and were led by LaTeesha DeLoach with 18 points, four steals and two assists. Cumberlands was outrebounded 22-17 but forced 21 Tiger turnovers.
Bellarmine 78, Maryville 59: Senior guard Mackenzie Martinez dished a career-high 11 assists as Beth Bowers led the Bellarmine scoring with 14 points.
Bluefield 68, Union 49: Peyton Hisel recorded a season-high 17 points to lead Union.
