UK golfer takes big lead into final round of tournament to crown state’s top amateur
It’s shaping up to be a three-horse race for the title of top men’s amateur golfer in the state of Kentucky, and the leader of the pack is in strong position to run away from his rivals.
UK redshirt sophomore Alex Goff had a spectacular showing in the second round of the 106th men’s Kentucky Amateur golf tournament at Lexington Country Club on Thursday, firing a 5-under 67 to claim a three-stroke lead heading into Friday’s final round.
Goff entered Thursday tied for second with former champion Andy Roberts, one stroke back of Paducah’s Josh Rhodes. Goff took over the lead with his second birdie of the day on the par-4, No. 5 hole, then built a three-stroke cushion with six more birdies through the final 13 holes of the round.
Goff is 10-under for the tournament, with Roberts and Rhodes tied for second at 7-under.
Rhodes followed up a tournament-best 66 in the first round with a 71, floundering a bit on the back nine with a double bogey on the par-3, No 13 hole and finishing out with a bogey on No. 18. Roberts was steady throughout the second round, bogeying just one hole but managing only three birdies to finish with a 70.
It’s four strokes back to fourth-place Bradley Sutherland, a former standout at Transylvania University. University of Kentucky senior Jacob Cook is alone in fifth place at 2-under after consecutive rounds of 71.
Lexington native Evan Davis — who played in college for Belmont University — is sixth at 1-under. No other competitors are under par through the first two rounds.
