Lafayette’s Sallee finishes second in OVC golf championship
Lafayette High School graduate Will Sallee finished as the individual runner-up and led Eastern Kentucky University to a fourth-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference golf championship at Muscle Shoals, Ala., on Wednesday.
Sallee, an all-tournament team selection, began his round with six straight pars and then carded two birdies. He finished the front nine with a bogey and sat at 1-under. After four straight pars on the back nine he hit a rough stretch with three straight bogeys. He birdied one of the two final holes and finished with a 2-over 74. His three-round total of 214 was 2-under and three shots behind the individual champion, Hunter Richardson of Tennessee-Martin.
Eastern shot a final-round score of 296 and finished with a 54-hole total of 883. The Colonels began the day tied for second, four shots off the lead, and briefly moved into first place but the 2015 champions couldn’t hold off a strong finish by Tennessee-Martin.
Tennessee-Martin (879) edged Morehead State (880) by one shot for the championship. Jacksonville State (881) was third, two shots in front of the Colonels.
EKU has placed among the top four at the conference championship 36 times in the last 39 years.
