EKU’s Moberly, U of L’s Kehoe top State Am qualifying
A pair of college golfers posted the top scores in Monday’s qualifying round of the Women’s Kentucky State Amateur Championship at Elizabethtown Country Club.
Elsa Moberly, who announced her transfer from Mississippi State to Eastern Kentucky after completing her freshman year in May, and Ellen Kehoe, a sophomore-to-be from the University of Louisville, were tied at 73 after 18 holes of stroke play Monday.
Match play will be the format for the remainder of the 31-player tournament. Fifteen first-round matches tee off Tuesday. Moberly, a Pulaski County High School graduate who was Kentucky’s Miss Golf in 2014, received a bye to Wednesday’s second round. Kehoe, a former all-state player at Taylor County High School, was runner-up to champion Becky Sharpe in last year’s State Am.
Murray State’s Anna Moore of Hopkinsville (77) and Jane Watts of Woodford County (78) followed Moberly and Kehoe. Lee University’s Caroline Moore from North Laurel also fired a 78 Monday to round out the top five.
