Former Marshall County and Murray State standout Patrick Newcomb shot a bogey-free, 6-under par 66 to take a two-shot lead after the first round at the Kentucky Open at University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville.

Newcomb, a two-time Kentucky State Amateur winner (2011 and 2012), started his round on the back nine with three birdies and added three more on the front.

Now a professional, Newcomb has made three starts this season on the PGA’s Latinoamerica Tour.

Seven golfers were at 4-under par, including a pair of former Kentucky Open champions in Brandon Brown (2011) and Ted Schulz (1984 and 1988).

University of Kentucky players Cooper Musselman and Evan Cox were also shot 68s along with McCracken County’s Chase Korte and former UK stars Grover Justice and Cody Martin.
