Paul Laurence Dunbar defeated Tates Creek, 3-1, in a volleyball match on Tuesday night.

Dunbar, ranked 13th in the latest coaches poll, took the first set, 25-15, with senior Virginia Smith getting the deciding point.

Tates Creek, ranked 20th, bounced back to take set two. Jordym Chenault, a senior, served up an ace for the final point in a 25-19 game.

Dunbar took the final two sets, 25-16 and 25-23. A heads up touch by Savannah Dudek set up match point in the final set, which ended on a block by Meredith Phillips, a junior, on the next volley.

Dunbar improved to 13-9 and 3-0 in 43rd District play while Creek fell to 9-8 and 1-2 in the district. The Bulldogs host Lafayette, which leads the 11th Region in wins (17), next Tuesday in a game that will likely determine the No. 1 seed for the district tournament.

“It’s a big one,” Dunbar Coach Jennifer Morgan said. “Lafayette is impressive. They’re very athletic and I think really have opened up people’s eyes within the district.”
