‘All you gotta do is never stop.’ Winners crowned in annual city wrestling meet
For the third time in the last five years, and the fifth time since 2011, Lafayette is Fayette County’s wrestling champion.
The Generals scored 164 points to comfortably claim the team title Saturday at Henry Clay. Henry Clay edged Bryan Station for second place, finishing with 117 points to 109 for the Defenders. Those schools finished with four individual city champions apiece but Lafayette used three first-place finishers and five second-place finishers to build its advantage; Bryan Station and Henry Clay combined for only one runner-up finisher.
Among the winners Saturday was Gio Watson, a Bryan Station freshman who pinned Frederick Douglass’ Sir Hawkins-Wright in the 285-pound division finals.
“This is my second year wrestling. One of my buddies from football was like, ‘Oh, you should do wrestling,’” Watson said. “I tried it out and I wasn’t very good, but this year I’ve gotten a lot better.”
Frederick Douglass, in its inaugural season as a program, finished fifth overall but had one individual winner – DoRayQuan Garrison in the 182-pound division – and three runners-up.
“Last year I got third. Today’s the best thing ever,” said Garrison, who previously wrestled at Lafayette. He defeated former teammate Will Marshall in the finals. “My man Will’s the strongest man I got. He’s the best man I’ve ever wrestled with. All you gotta do is never stop.”
