They secured a region three-peat. Up next? A state-championship shot.
The Tates Creek girls cruised to their third straight regional team title and walked away with 11 event champions.
Junior Rosalynd Hollingsworth won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and was part of the winning 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relay teams. Myann Davidson, also a junior, was part of both those relays along with the winning 4-by-400 team, and finished second to Hollingsworth in the 100.
Waveney Brooks and Brianna Payton were part of the champion 4-by-400 and 4-by-800 teams, and Payton also won the 800-meter run. Distance star Jenna Strange swept the 1600- and 3200-meter runs with ease. Tates Creek picked up wins in the field events thanks to strong performances from Destiny Berry-Peterika (shot put) and Amareea Saunders (discus).
"We did a good job of just trying to make this week as relaxed as possible," Tates Creek Coach Jonathan Hawks said. "I never put too much emphasis on region or city or those other meets. I try to just put the focus on doing what you do best. Come out here and don't think about the meet so much. Think about what you need to do to get into the seed or the lanes and the things that you need to do for state."
Tates Creek will pay more attention to detail during the six days between the region meet and state on Saturday. The Commodores hope to win their first state track title.
"We haven't really talked about it a lot but at the end of the day I think it's something they want to achieve as a team," Hawks said. "For me, I just want to prepare to the best of my ability and give them a shot to go out and do something great if that's what they're wanting to do."
