There was no high school tennis season or state tournament in Kentucky this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that didn’t mean the state’s top players would go unrecognized.

The Kentucky High School Tennis Coaches Association named its 2020 All-State teams as well as Mr. and Miss Tennis recipients for the year on Tuesday. Trinity senior Michael Chou and McCracken County senior Sophia Shiben were recognized as the state’s top tennis players.

Chou was an All-State selection in 2018 and 2019 and was a runner-up for the 2018 KHSAA state doubles title. He was the singles runner-up for Region 7 in 2019.

Shiben was part of three state team champions in her time with the Mustangs, collected from 2015 to 2017, and two state runner-up teams. She finished her career with a 21-5 singles record at the state level and a 110-26 overall record at the prep level.

Members of the KYHSTCA submitted nominations for Mr. and Miss Tennis, the winners of which were selected by the KYHSTCA board.

The All-State teams had 16 automatic qualifiers representing each of the state’s 16 regions. Those representatives were gathered from senior nominees submitted by member coaches, which were then voted on by head coaches from each school in those respective regions. The leading vote-getter became the automatic qualifier for each region.

At-large selections to the All-State teams were made by the KYHSTCA from remaining nominees who were submitted to the board. All nominees who weren’t named to their All-State teams were recognized as honorable mentions.
