Highlights: Boyle County shuts out a defending state champ; Danville tops North Hardin

Boyle County 31, Bowling Green 0: The Rebels (4-1) stifled the defending Class 5A champions defensively and got big plays from quarterback Jagger Gillis in the rout. Gillis had a passing TD, rushing TD and a 54-yard interception return for a score in the game. Cole Lanter had the TD catch and added an 8-yard rushing score. Jackson Smith tacked on a 45-yard field goal. Bowling Green (3-2) was limited to 168 total yards and seven first downs and committed two turnovers.

Danville 28, North Hardin 25: Brady Morse connected with Corydon Crawford for a 51-yard TD with 3:30 left to play as the Admirals (3-2) stunned Class 6A’s Trojans (1-4) in a late-scheduled COVID-19 replacement game.

Morse completed 11 of 22 passes for 231 yards and two TDs, both to Crawford. Their other score was an 80-yard catch and carry by Crawford in the third quarter. Caleb Burns rushed for 112 yards and Mauri Brown picked up a pair of short rushing TDs for Danville.

North Hardin’s Manie Wimberly had a pair of TD passes to Skyler Coffey. Shaun Boykins broke away for a 92-yard rushing TD and David Boyd also scored for the Trojans.

Mercer County 22, Southwestern 21: Despite having the ball at the Mercer County 9-yard line with 42 seconds left in the game, Southwestern (3-1) was unable to secure a come-from-behind win. A 26-yard field goal attempt by the Warriors went wide left. Sophomore Christian Walden, senior Giddeon Brainard and junior Tanner Wright all had rushing scores for Southwestern. Mercer County (4-1) senior quarterback Trosper Buchanan had a 34-yard touchdown pass to senior Jackson Peavler in the Titans’ win.

The Mercer scoring pass came on a fourth-and-23 play. Peavler had a 24-yard rushing TD in the first half. Wyatt Sanfort added a 1-yard score and Brayden Dunn ran in an important two-point conversion for the Titans.

East Jessamine 24, Lincoln County 21: The Jaguars (1-4) snapped a nine-game losing streak as Tajii Jackson rushed for 105 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns.

East Jessamine trailed 21-16 in the fourth quarter until Jackson broke free for a 22-yard TD run to set the final margin with 1:27 to play in the game. The Jags also got a 9-yard pass from Justin Hisle to Dylan Carter in the first half. Lincoln County (1-4) got two TDs from Clayton Davis and the other from Lee Amon.

Sayre 42, Dayton 8: Cole Pennington threw for 219 yards and combined for three TDs with Jackson Marshall for the Spartans (4-0). Pennington also ran in another score. Brock Coffman returned a punt 49 yards for a touchdown, as well. On defense, Pennington and Coffman each had interceptions.

Paris 22, Morgan County 14: Jakari Ransom broke away for a 36-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, his second score of the game, to seal the win for the host Greyhounds (3-2). Quarterback Chase Puckett hit Darian Bell on a 9-yard pass and ran in a two-point conversion in the second quarter half to give Paris a lead it would not relinquish. Jordan Sexton scored TDs in the first and fourth quarters for Morgan County (2-3).

Washington County 45, Marion County 21: Beau Baker threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Commanders (2-3) claimed the newly commissioned Coach Rob Reader Memorial Border Barrel.

The original barrel, created for this Border War in 2019, was presented to Coach Reader’s family in honor of his legacy. Reader envisioned a special trophy for the nearly five-decade old rivalry with Marion County. Reader died from liver cancer last month.

Jakobie Hughes took screen passes from Baker for 31, 55, and 25 yards into the endzone. Noah Reynolds had the other TD catch and John McDonald ran in a 3-yard score. Jalil Smith, Harry VanWhy and Damarion LaCart scored for the Knights (0-4).

Scott County 55, Paul Laurence Dunbar 0: Six different Scott County players had a rushing touchdown and freshman quarterback Andrew Hickey threw for two touchdowns as the Cardinals rolled to victory. Senior Montago Jones had 100 rushing yards for Scott County (2-2), which recorded 344 rushing yards as a team. Scott County scored 18 points off three Dunbar (1-4) turnovers.

Bryan Station 42, Tates Creek 0: Sophomore quarterback Trenton Cutwright threw for two touchdowns and both junior Damin Green and senior Amodeus Taylor had rushing scores in a blowout win for the Defenders (3-1). Both Green and Taylor also had defensive scores in addition to their offensive tallies: Green had a 50-yard interception return touchdown and Taylor had a 40-yard fumble return touchdown, both in the third quarter. Tates Creek (1-4) junior Laquan Newby led all players with six tackles.

Madison Central 49, Lafayette 0: Brady Hensley rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns and Adrien Parks went for 96 yards and two more scores as the Indians (4-1) extended their winning streak to four games. Hagan Harrison and Kenyatta Hardge also scored for Madison Central who will get a bye week before hosting Pikeville on Oct. 1.

It took Hensley only two carries, a 31-yard run and a 25-yard run, to score Madison Central’s first touchdown. Madison Central led 28-0 after one quarter and 42-0 by halftime as Lafayette (0-5) struggled offensively, turning the ball over on downs on three of their first four possessions with an interception on the other.

Great Crossing 28, Bourbon County 7: Junior Cayden Allen, senior Kalib Perry and junior Gabe Nichols all had rushing touchdowns from 10 yards or closer as Great Crossing (5-0) remained undefeated. Junior Tyris Cobbins led the Warhawks with 82 rushing yards. Bourbon County (2-2) had its lone score come via a 90-yard kick return touchdown by junior Jaden Commodore.

Frankfort 40, Bracken County 16: Sam Davis threw for 246 yards and three TDs and Azeno Williams had a 96 yards and a touchdown rushing as the Panthers (3-2) jumped to a 26-0 lead in the first half.

Davis hit Larry Carter on scoring strikes of 13 and 17 yards and combined with Xavier Cleveland for a 47-yard score. Carter added an interception return for a TD in the second half. Jaden Morgan also scored for Frankfort. Payton Tully and Austin Holder scored for Bracken (3-2).

Beechwood 27, Covington Catholic 7: Senior quarterback Cameron Hergott had a pair of rushing touchdowns, including one from 50 yards out, as Beechwood (5-0) has now won each of its games this season by at least 20 points. Senior Avery Courtney and junior Mitchell Berger also had scores on the ground for the Tigers. The only touchdown for the Colonels (2-3) came on the ground from close range by senior Adam Holtz.

Conner 38, Campbell County 7: Alex Castrucci had TD runs of 8, 21 and 22 yards and a 35-yard touchdown pass to Terry Phillips for the Cougars (3-2). Alijah Thompson added a touchdown and Nicholas Keller kicked a 42-yard field goal in the rout of the Camels (1-4).

Shawnee 14, Trimble County 0: DaJian Lenoir scored a pair of touchdowns for the Golden Eagles (2-3) who ended a 63-game on-field losing streak that has lasted seven seasons.

“It means a lot, especially these guys who have been here three or four years to actually have a win,” Shawnee Coach Vernon Gibson told the Courier Journal. “It means the world to them. It’s a new beginning.”

Lenoir’s first score was an 80-yard run. The other was a 30-yard catch from Quinton Coleman. Shawnee’s other victory this season was via a COVID-19 forfeit.

Male 24, Trinity 10: Vinny Anthony caught three TD passes from Nic Shutte as the No. 1 Bulldogs (4-0) topped archrival Trinity (0-5).
