Highlights: Pikeville avenges upset, UK commit scores 4 TDs, Henry Clay gets first win
Highlights from Week 10 around Kentucky high school football on Friday night:
Pikeville 17, Hazard 0: Blake Birchfield scored a touchdown in each half and Aaron Chang booted a 30-yard field goal as the visiting Panthers (8-2) exacted a small measure of revenge against the team that stunned them last season in the district championship.
Pikeville turned Hazard (6-4) back on two red-zone drives. Sam Wright picked off a Hazard pass on his own 1-yard line in the first quarter. He would add another interception later. Pikeville stuffed a Hazard drive to the 5-yard line in the fourth. Birchfield’s scores were from 8 yards and 33 yards out.
The win locks Pikeville in as the district’s top seed. Hazard, as the two seed, will play Sayre in two week to open the Class A playoffs.
Sayre 41, Phelps 8: The Spartans (7-2) locked up the third seed in the Class A, District 7 playoffs with their blowout win over the Hornets (2-8). Cole Pennington threw for three touchdowns, all to Jackson Marshall and ran for another. Caleb Kern also tacked on a TD run while Charlie Slabaugh made an interception. Marshall led Sayre with 11 tackles and had a pick-six.
Franklin County 35, Central 6: Franklin County star and UK football commit Kaden Moorman had a 16-yard touchdown catch, a 9-yard touchdown pass, a 28-yard touchdown run and a 2-yard touchdown run, in the first half alone, as Franklin County (6-3) won on the road at Central (6-4) for the team’s second straight blowout against the Yellow Jackets in Louisville.
The other Franklin County touchdown came on a 48-yard screen pass score by Zach Claudio. Central’s lone touchdown came via a 63-yard score by Cortez Stone.
Paul Laurence Dunbar 34, Lafayette 14: Paul Laurence Dunbar scored 34 straight points after falling behind 7-0 to defeat Lafayette, with five different players contributing touchdowns. Cole Colony and Erik White had touchdown runs from 12 yards and 49 yards, while Mason Hayslett had a 2-yard fumble recovery touchdown for Dunbar (5-4). DJ Walker opened the scoring for Lafayette (2-8) with a short rushing TD.
Dunbar finished the game with 348 rushing yards, although only Kamarion Robinson went over 100 yards for the Bulldogs, who will be their district’s top seed when playoffs begin Nov. 5.
Lexington Catholic 50, Anderson County 0: Walker Hall, Max Mooring and Quentin Duffy all had rushing touchdowns and quarterback Jack Gohmann threw for two more touchdowns as the Knights (7-2) shut out the Bearcats (2-7). LexCath scored more than 20 points in both the first and third quarters.
Blake Busson also had a 40-yard punt return touchdown for the Knights.
Henry Clay 34, Tates Creek 33 (OT): A blocked extra point in overtime set up Jayden Bailey’s 1-yard touchdown run and a game-winning point-after by Sergei Buchheit to give the Blue Devils (1-8) their first win of the season.
Buchheit also nailed field goals of 46 and 37 yards in the first half to help push Henry Clay to a 13-0 lead. But Tates Creek rallied with 27 straight points on TDs by Andre Witherington, Kobe Middleton, Mathew Underwood and Ke’shon Douthitt. The Commodores held a 27-13 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Then, it was Henry Clay’s time to rally as Jacob Childress scored his second TD of the game with 9:59 left in the fourth quarter and Kasen Parks took a Blake VanHorn pass 48 yards for the tying score with 3:36 left. Underwood scored the first TD of the overtime for Tates Creek (2-7).
Frederick Douglass 54, Montgomery County 7: Ja’Kari Cowherd had a highlight-reel touchdown catch as Frederick Douglass (9-0) remained perfect on the season with a win at Montgomery County (4-5). The Broncos have not allowed more than 14 points in any game this season and have now scored 35 or more points on six occasions. Ty Bryant scored on a pair of TD runs. Cameron Dunn broke away for a 65-yard score. Caden Johnson and Tresean Benford each had interception TDs. Benford’s went for 83 yards. Samuel Cornett also had a TD pass to Tylon Webb.
Frankfort 40, Berea 8: The Panthers (6-3) notched the program’s 600th victory with a rout of the Pirates in Berea that was stopped by officials in the fourth quarter after some physical altercations on the field between players.
Frankfort locked up its district’s second seed as quarterback Sam Davis completed TD passes of 7 and 68 yards to Larry Carter in the first half and ran in a 9-yard score in the second. Azeno Williams and Jaden Morgan each had rushing TDs. Morgan also returned a kickoff 68 yards for a score in the third quarter.
Berea (3-6) scored on Yamil Cruz’s 35-yard TD run in the third quarter and got a two-point conversion by Jaiden Cunningham.
Ballard 24, Scott County 21: Rushing touchdowns from Kannon Wyche and Keshawn Hargrove, along with a 68-yard touchdown reception by Chaunte Marrero, were enough for Ballard (6-3) to get past Scott County (5-4) in Louisville. The Cardinals outgained the Bruins, 343-324, but Scott County had possession of the ball for 12 less minutes than Ballard. Luke Colvin of Scott County led all players with 150 rushing yards.
Boyle County 49, Bourbon County 12: Jagger Gillis threw for 167 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers as the Rebels (8-1) built a 42-6 lead by halftime. Dalton Stone and Trey Lanter each had rushing TDs while Cole Lanter, Avery Bodner, Cash Logan and Luke Imfeld had the touchdown catches.
For Bourbon County (4-5), Clay Estes threw TD passes to Amir Hassan-Roberts and Josh Moody.
Collins 35, West Jessamine 34: Kenyon Goodin threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 146 yards and three more scores as the Titans (7-2) fended off a fourth quarter rally by the Colts (4-4) thanks in part to a missed extra point on West Jessamine’s final score.
West Jessamine QB Jacob Jones also had a big night with 102 yards and three TDs rushing and 124 yards passing with a scoring toss to Dalton Carter. Mark Hutzel led Collins in receiving with 85 yards and two TDs.
The win means Collins will host West Jessamine when the two meet again in the first round of the playoffs in two weeks.
Great Crossing 49, Grant County 14: Seven different players scored for the Warhawks (7-2). Cayden Allen, Zack Morris, Zackerrey Kelley and Peyton Harris had TDs as Great Crossing bolted to a 28-0 lead in the first half. Gabe Nichols, Isaiah Johnson and Tyris Cobbins also scored. The loss eliminated Grant County (0-9) from the postseason.
Mercer County 41, DeSales 14: Brayden Dunn scored a pair of rushing TDs and Trosper Buchanan connected on a 78-yard scoring pass to Thaddeus Mays as the Titans (7-2) rolled. Mays also had a kickoff return touchdown and Buchanan had a goal-line plunge.
Southwestern 42, Pulaski County 14: Giddeon Brainard scored on a pair of runs, a kickoff return and a fumble recovery as the Warriors (8-1) capitalized on four Maroons turnovers to pull away and take an 18-17 edge in the rivalry and capture the top seed in their district.
Brainard’s TD runs went for 45 and 25 yards. His fumble recovery score also covered 45 yards. Ryun Dye picked up a blocked punt for a touchdown and Braden Gipson scored on a 43-yard run for Pulaski County (6-4).
Woodford County 54, East Jessamine 7: Woodford County led 20-7 after the first quarter and 33-7 at halftime in a comfortable win over East Jessamine. The Yellow Jackets (9-0) stayed perfect on the season while the Jaguars (1-8) were held to seven points or less for the fourth time this season.
Christian Academy-Louisville 45, Western Hills 0: Easton Messer had a 68-yard punt return TD and caught four passes for 109 yards and two scores as the visiting Centurions (8-1) routed the Wolverines (1-8). CAL quarterback Cole Hodge threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns.
