West Jessamine tops Great Crossing in state volleyball tourney, gets No. 1 Sacred Heart next
The quarterfinals of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Volleyball Tournament have been set thanks to game action across the state Monday.
Out of Central Kentucky, West Jessamine, the 12th Region champion, topped the 11th Region champ Great Crossing 3-2 in five sets (25-21, 21-25, 25-13, 16-25, 15-8).
The Colts (36-5) next face Sacred Heart (32-9) at noon Friday. The Valkyries were ranked No. 1 in the final regular-season poll conducted by the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association. West Jessamine ranked No. 7 in that poll. The Valkyries defeated Henderson County in straight sets Monday.
In other round-of-16 action, Bowling Green topped Daviess County 3-0, Boyd County beat Floyd County 3-0, Mercy defeated Oldham County 3-0, Montgomery County beat Corbin 3-2 and St. Henry defeated Letcher County 3-0. All of Monday’s games were hosted by the team ranked higher in the KHSAA’s RPI ratings. Corbin was the only host to lose its match.
This weekend, the tournament moves to George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester with West Jessamine and Sacred Heart serving up the first quarterfinal match of the day. This is the second year Clark County has hosted the state tournament in their new gym. The semifinals begin Saturday morning with the finals Saturday night at 7 p.m.
