Dunbar wins boys’ singles and team state bowling titles. Lafayette girls have runner-up.
Paul Laurence Dunbar swept the boys’ team and singles titles at the 2022 KHSAA Bowling State Championships on Tuesday in Louisville. In the girls’ competition a day earlier, Lafayette’s Avery Reeves finished as singles runner-up.
Broox Golden, a sophomore, entered the boys’ tournament’s step-ladder finals as the No. 1 seed and rolled a 234 to top Pendleton County’s Koby Brewer in the title match at Executive Strike and Spare in Louisville. Brewer entered as the No. 4 seed and had to top two other bowlers to reach Golden.
Golden navigated the singles tournament’s early rounds by bowling 199, 243 and 235 in the first three legs and bowled a pair of 247s in the semifinals to give him 1,171 pins and the top seed over Ryle’s Dylan Inyart by seven pins.
Dunbar entered the team tournament as the No. 6 seed after two qualifying rounds. The Bulldogs then marched through the bottom half of the 16-team bracket and defeated No. 4 seed Pleasure Ridge Park 256-217, 183-167 and 211-185 for the championship.
They are the first singles and team bowling titles for Dunbar. The team’s roster included Brennan Eddy, Alan Guillen, Bobby Smith, Charlie Smith, Nathaniel Egan, Aramis Linville, Leslie Moore, Kaci Sapp, Jayden Tyree and Golden. They are coached by Christopher D. Sapp.
On Tuesday, Lafayette’s Reeves bowled a 196 to come up just short of Pleasure Ridge Park’s Paige Frantz and her score of 218 in the girls’ singles finals. Reeves entered the step-ladder championship rounds as the top seed just ahead of Frantz with a 1,094 to 1,071 margin over the first five games of the tournament.
Graves County won the girls’ team competition over Johnson Central 223-171, 121-149, 164-183 and 137-158.
