For the third time in the event’s four years, Harrison County won the Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Associations Girls’ State Championships team title, but it took nearly every last match to secure the crown.

Layla Davis’ pin fall win over Madison Southern’s Hayley Young in the 235-pound class, the next-to-last championship match of the day, secured Harrison County’s title-winning margin as it went on to best Taylor County by a final team points count of 146 to 140. North Hardin took third at 106 points.

The event, originally scheduled three weeks ago, but postponed due to snow, included 210 female wrestlers from 64 schools and was held at Harrison County Middle School in Cynthiana.

Bryan Station’s Alicia Galindo counted among the state champions. Galindo defeated Union County’s Tanya Bacon 4-1 in the 100-pound class.

In addition to Davis, Harrison County had six top-six finishes. Ryle had the most individual winners with two, Olivia Messerly (120) and Addison Messerly (126).

Girls’ wrestling is not yet sanctioned by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, so this event was conducted by the coaches association as the sport continues to grow.
