Lexington Catholic defeated Warren East 7-2 on Saturday to claim the 2022 Kentucky 2A Championships softball tournament title.

The title marked the fifth Kentucky 2A Championships crown for Lexington Catholic this school year across several sports.

Freshman Abby Hammond went 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-run home run in the fifth inning and two runs scored while also pitching all seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits for her 15th win of the season. Lydia Kennedy and Sara Prisinzano each also had two hits and two runs scored for the Knights with Prisinzano knocking in a run, as well.

Lexington Catholic, ranked No. 10 in the latest Kentucky Prep Softball coaches poll, defeated No. 11 Harrison County and Corbin earlier on Saturday before taking down No. 12 Warren East in the championship game.

With its culminating rounds staged in Owensboro, the Kentucky 2A Championships feature teams from mid-size schools who’ve formed a competition inspired by the All “A” Classic for small schools. The 2A boys’ and girls’ basketball tournaments began in 2018 with soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball added since. This is the second year for the softball tournament at Jack C. Fisher Park. Teams making it to Owensboro had to advance out of sectional tournaments leading into the final three rounds.

This school year, Lexington Catholic has dominated the Kentucky 2A events by winning the tournament championships in boys’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, volleyball and now softball.

LexCath’s baseball team reached the Kentucky 2A quarterfinals on Saturday in Owensboro, where it fell to eventual champion, No. 7 Paducah Tilghman.
