The first Kentucky high school football RPI rankings are out. Who’s No. 1?
Frederick Douglass and Boyle County top their respective football classes in the first RPI ratings released Monday by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
Besides Douglass in Lexington, Sayre (3-1) ranks No. 17 in Class A, Lexington Christian (2-3) ranks No. 15 in Class 2A, Lexington Catholic (4-1) ranks No. 4 in Class 4A; and in Class 6A there’s No. 12 Bryan Station (1-3), No. 14 Henry Clay (2-3), No. 23 Tates Creek (1-4), No. 25 Paul Laurence Dunbar (1-4) and No. 28 Lafayette (0-5).
The Broncos (5-0) ranked second in the Class 5A RPI behind Woodford County at the end of last season and made it all the way to the state finals. The No. 3 Yellow Jackets (5-0) sit just behind No. 2 Covington Catholic (4-1) in this first release, but there’s plenty of football left until November for the ratings to shake out.
Higher-seeded RPI teams get to host their playoff games beginning with the third round of the postseason.
LCA has been Class 2A’s No. 1 RPI team at the end of the last two seasons, helping pave its way to the Class 2A finals at Kroger Field where it lost to Beechwood both times. The Eagles have a long climb to move up from No. 15 this year and will likely have to make their 2022 run on the road if they survive the first two rounds.
Boyle County (5-0) has won back-to-back Class 4A championships. Each of those titles came as their class’s No. 1 RPI team.
Class 6A No. 2 Clark County (4-0) is in its second season under former Paintsville state championship coach Joe Chirico and is off to its best start in more than a decade.
The KHSAA’s Rating Percentage Index ranks teams based on a formula that includes winning percentage (WP), opponent’s winning percentage (OWP) and opponent’s opponent winning (OOWP) percentage. There is a flattening of the out-of-state opponent’s OOWP to .500 to avoid having to research scores of out-of-state teams.
The RPIs in each class will be updated weekly based on results until the playoffs, where they will be used to seed each postseason bracket beginning with the third round or “region championships.” At that stage, the eight districts in each class are split into eastern and western halves and the regular season RPI is used to seed each half. The semifinals are then reseeded regardless of geography.
