Survive and advance: Madison Central, LCA make boys’ State Final Round golf tournament
Both Region 9 boys’ high school golf team champion Madison Central and runner-up Lexington Christian advanced to next week’s Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA State Final Round after First Round play Monday at Winchester Country Club.
Also advancing as an individual qualifier was Sayre’s Hayden Adams, the Region 9 individual champion, along with 14 other golfers from Region 9-12 schools and Pulaski County, who topped the team leaderboard in this inaugural two-stage state tournament.
Pulaski County’s Reece Broughton shot the low round of the day, a 5-under 67, to help his team combine for a 301 mark to top Madison Central (305), Lexington Christian (310) and five other region champions or runners-up from the eastern third of the state.
Winchester Country Club was set up as a 6,220-yard, par-72 course for Monday’s event. Each team counts its top four scorers from its five-player squads. Each of the four regions competing sent their top two teams and top 10 individual qualifiers from their respective region tournaments.
Also contributing to Pulaski’s team score were Mason Daugherty (76), Cayden Lancaster (78) and Zach Ousley (80) with Kellan McKinney’s 85 thrown out. Madison Central counted Clay Pendergrass (74), Radney Bales (74), Warren Thomis (78) and Mason Hamrick (79) with Brandon Bond’s 80 thrown out. LCA counted McKean Collins (75), Grey Goff (76), Jake Merryman (76) and Tanner Owens (83) with Luke Barrett’s 84 thrown out.
The State First Round was held at three sites across Kentucky on Monday with three teams and 15 individual qualifiers from each site advancing to next week’s State Final Round at Bowling Green Country Club on Oct. 3-5. None of Monday’s scores carry over to next week. This is the first year the KHSAA has split its state golf tournament into two stages over multiple sites.
From Heritage Hill Golf Club in Shepherdsville, Oldham County (301), Highlands (318) and South Oldham (321) advanced from regions 5-8. From Owensboro Country Club, Taylor County (301), Bowling Green (306) and Marshall County (310) advanced from regions 1-4.
The girls’ State First Round was scheduled for Tuesday at the same sites with their final round scheduled for Oct. 6-8, also in Bowling Green.
