Coaches name All-11th Region girls’ basketball team
Sayre’s Kylee Dennis and Madison Central Coach Scott True took top honors as coaches from the 11th Region announced their All-11th Region Girls’ Basketball Team and coach of the year on Wednesday.
Dennis, a 5-foot-10 guard committed to Southern Indiana, earned player of the year honors for a season in which she averaged 28.7 points per game for the Spartans, the second-highest girls’ scoring average in the state. She also pulled down a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game.
This season, Dennis became the third all-time leading scorer in Lexington girls’ basketball history with 2,340 career points, trailing only Lexington Catholic’s Chelsea Chowning and Kelli Stamper.
Last week, Dennis also earned region player of the year honors from the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches, a designation that makes her a candidate for the state’s highest individual basketball honor, Miss Basketball. The voting for Miss Basketball is currently underway and its announcement is scheduled after the season.
True, in his first season as head coach at Madison Central after three seasons as an assistant at Franklin County, has led the Indians to a 20-6 record. The success follows four consecutive losing seasons in Tomahawk Valley, including a 12-13 mark last year. True was previously a head coach at Lexington Catholic.
Among other Lexington all-region team honorees are Frederick Douglass sophomore Niah Rhodes and senior Jermyra Christian. Like Dennis, Christian, an East Jessamine transfer, also topped 2,000 points for her career this season. Henry Clay’s Allison Stone also made the list.
And for a third year in a row, Lexington Catholic’s Katherine Truitt doubled up as an all-region basketball player in the same year she also topped the all-region soccer team. Truitt is a three-time all-region soccer player of the year.
