The 2023 Lexington Herald-Leader All-State Boys’ Basketball Team is here

The Herald-Leader is proud to announce its 2023 All-State Boys’ Basketball Teams as voted on by high school coaches across the commonwealth.

North Laurel’s Reed Sheppard, who last week was named Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball, tops our list of All-State players for the second year in a row as the Herald-Leader’s Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year.

Sheppard, a 6-3 point guard signed to play with Kentucky, appeared on all 140 coaches’ ballots and got 67 player of the year votes.

Lyon County’s Travis Perry, a 6-2 junior who this season surpassed “King” Kelly Coleman on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s all-time career points list, finished second in our All-State voting and got 42 player of the year votes.

Joining them on the Herald-Leader’s first team are George Rogers Clark’s Jerone Morton, Covington Holy Cross’ Jacob Meyer, Warren Central’s Kade Unseld and Chappelle Whitney, Covington Catholic’s Evan Ipsaro, Owen County’s Teagan Moore, Ballard’s Gabe Sisk and Lexington Catholic’s Reece Potter.

The Herald-Leader All-State Teams are based on coaches’ selections in a statewide survey conducted by the Lexington Herald-Leader/Kentucky.com. Players are listed in order of point totals based on coaches’ votes. There are three teams of 10 players, plus 20 honorable mentions.

Methodology: Our annual All-State survey was emailed to all 276 KHSAA boys’ basketball coaches in Kentucky using their email registered with the KHSAA. Multiple attempts were made to encourage every school to participate. Coaches were asked to select their top 10 players and points were assigned based on a player’s position on the ballot (10 points for Player of the Year, nine points for No. 2, eight points for No. 3, etc.), and tabulated across all ballots received. The top 50 players receiving votes made our All-State list. This year, 140 coaches participated.
