The Lexington Herald-Leader and Kentucky.com are proud to present the 2023 All-City Softball Team and player of the year as voted on by the eight high school coaches of Lexington’s varsity KHSAA programs.

The Lexington player of the year honor goes to Lexington Catholic’s Abby Hammond, a sophomore pitcher who led her team in hitting with a .511 average and 12 home runs while being among the state’s best pitchers in terms of earned-run average (1.23) and strikeouts (282).

Coincidentally, Owen Jenkins, another LexCath sophomore, earned this year’s All-City baseball player of the year honor.

Hammond and Tates Creek junior shortstop Tinley Easton each received three player of the year votes from the city’s coaches with fellow first-teamers Karsyn Rockvoan of Bryan Station and Claire Cronan of Lafayette getting one top nod each.

Rounding out the first team were Lafayette’s Nora Mack and Trinity Bridges, Henry Clay’s Ella Smith, Tates Creek’s Peyton Plotts, Bryan Station’s Morgan Williams and Lexington Christian’s Anna Gorshak.

Lexington’s eight varsity softball coaches were asked to nominate players for all-city consideration. Later, the coaches ranked, one through 10, their top players from that list of nominees. They were not permitted to vote for their own players.

Selections were made regardless of position and each team was limited to a maximum of five all-city honorees. Point values were assigned to each voting position (10 points for first-place votes, nine points for second-place votes, etc.) and the accumulation of those points was used to create the First and Second Teams each composed of 10 players.
