Lexington Christian and Lexington Catholic girls defend their indoor track state titles
The girls track teams from Lexington Christian and Lexington Catholic reigned once again at the KHSAA Indoor Track and Field State Championships in Louisville this week.
This is the second year the KHSAA has sanctioned indoor track and field state meets and held them at Norton Sports and Learning Center in Louisville. Like its spring outdoor meet, teams are divided into three classes based on enrollment for competition.
In Thursday’s Class 3A competition, Lexington had three event winners. Henry Clay’s Jayden Channer won the 55-meter dash, Frederick Douglass’s Malcolm Crow claimed the triple jump and the Lafayette relay team of Buzz Christensen, Van Weimer, Andrew Grace and Xavier Richardson won the 4-by-800.
Lexington Christian’s girls team defended its Class A championship on Wednesday on the strength of first-place finishes by Anna Reese Hopper in the 55 meters, Kennedy Moughamian in the 3,200 and a sweep of the relay events.
LCA’s Lilly Meyer, Anna Reese Hopper, Laynie Hopper and Mahari Crump won the 4-by-200 meter relay. Violet Griese took Anna Reese Hopper’s spot in the 4-by-400. And Griese was joined by Annie Sewell, June Karis and Moughamian in the 4-by-800 win.
In Tuesday’s Class 2A meet Lexington Catholic defended its girls state title with individual wins by Caroline Beiting in both the 800 and 1,600 meters and Joanna Bryant in the 400.
LexCath also won two relays with Beiting and Bryant teaming with Sarah Scott and Abigail Turner to win the 4-by-400 and Anna Dawahare joining Bryant, Scott and Beiting to win the 4-by-800.
The boys teams from Green County and Covington Catholic defended their state titles in Class A and 2A, respectively. In Class 3A, North Oldham won the girls team title and St. Xavier won the boys.
Other individual winners from Central Kentucky this week were:
▪ Frankfort Christian’s Abby Moore in the Class A 200 meters
▪ Franklin County’s Mariah Jackson in the 55-meter hurdles, Boyle County’s Kenda Christopher in the triple jump and Franklin County’s Delano Collins in the 55-meter dash, all in Class 2A.
▪ Woodford County’s Addison Moore won both the 800 and 1,600 meters and Jackson Gray in the pole vault, West Jessamine’s Aly Doyle in the 55 hurdles, and East Jessamine’s Kaitlyn Napier in the shot put, all in Class 3A.
This year, the KHSAA tweaked a number of event distances from the ones it used in 2024 to better conform with national high school indoor standards.
