Lexington Christian dominates Class A region track meet with wins in 20 events
For the second year in a row, Lexington Christian claimed both the boys and girls team titles at the Class A, 5th Region Track and Field Championships.
The Eagles’ impressive performances included wins in both the girls 1,600- and 3,200-meter races by freshman Kennedy Moughamian Saturday at Gallatin County High School in Gallatin.
LCA took the top two places in the girls’ 100, 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 races in addition to a sweep of all four relay races for the second year in a row.
Moughamian, the defending girls region champion in both long-distance events and the defending state champion in the 3,200, won the 1,600 in 5:08.86, almost eight seconds ahead of teammate Hadley Raisor in second place and then took the 3,200 in 11:27.60, more than 10 faster than LCA’s June Karls.
LCA’s girls team had seven other individual event winners: Mahari Crump in the 100, Lilly Meyer in the 400, Laynie Hopper in the 300 hurdles, Hadley Raisor in the 800, Anna Reese Hopper in the long jump; Abbigail Williams in the triple jump and Harper Cole in the pole vault. Notably, soccer and basketball standout Jentry Bertram ran the first leg of three of LCA’s four relay wins.
Those results gave LCA 214 team points, well ahead of second place Paris’ 56.
On the boys side, LCA won six individual events in addition to the first place 4-by-400 meter relay by Jeremiah Burbage, Shaun Ware, Kyle Stickel and Paxton Gray.
Gray won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and the long jump for the Eagles while Bode Byall took the 3,200, Hayes Preston won the shot put and Thomas Sylvester claimed the pole vault.
Sayre, Lexington’s other Class A track school, notched three individual winners: Rhese Perrin in the boys 400 meters and Adrian Smith in the girls shot put and discus.
Winners and runners-up in each region event automatically qualify for the KHSAA Class A State Track and Field Championships to be held May 29 at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Complex.
