Lexington Catholic girls track and field claims third straight region title

Lexington Catholic’s girls track and field team continued its dominant run of recent years by winning its third consecutive Class 2A, 4th Region meet Wednesday and looks poised to claim a three-peat at next week’s state event, as well.

The Knights won eight events and finished runner-up in seven others in their regional at Bourbon County High School in Paris.

Caroline Beiting, a state record holder in the 800 meters and defending state champion in the 800 and 1,600, claimed both individual races Wednesday and took part in the winning 4-by-800 and 4-by-400 meter relays for the Knights.

LexCath’s 181 team points bested second-place Bourbon County’s 128 and included other event wins by Anna Dawahare in the 3,200 and Lauren Counts in both the shot put and discus.

Dawahare joined Beiting, Sarah Scott and Abigail Turner in the 4-by-800 meter relay, while Joanna Bryant ran with Beiting, Scott and Turner in the 4-by-400. Turner finished runner-up to Beiting in the 800 and 1,600.

On the boys’ side, defending state champion Covington Catholic repeated as region champs, led by Will Sheets’ wins in the 800 and 3,200 and Quinten Jones’ victories in the discus and shot put. In all, the Colonels had seven event winners.

Lexington Catholic’s boys team won the 4-by-800 meter relay (Asher Feddock, Caleb Turner, Mark Reinhart and Liam Havens) and had two other automatic state qualifiers with runner-up finishes by Feddock in the 1,600 and Danny Nguyen in the triple jump.

The winners and runners-up in each region event automatically qualify for the KHSAA Class 2A State Track and Field Championships to be held May 30 at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Complex.
