- Lexington Christian secured first in team scoring to reach state golf finals.
- Defending champ Athena Singh shot 2-under to lead individual qualifiers.
- Three teams and 15 individuals from Winchester advanced to Bowling Green.
Lexington Christian’s girls golf team took first among the eight schools competing Monday in the State First Round Girls Golf Tournament at Winchester Country Club as defending state singles champion and reigning Miss Golf Athena Singh of Rowan County topped the list of individual qualifiers for next week’s final-round competition in Bowling Green.
In addition, Parker Haddix, the Lexington Catholic seventh-grader who won last week’s 9th Region individual title, survived a three-way playoff to make the cut.
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s State First Round girls events were held at three sites Monday. In Winchester, Central Kentucky’s top 9th Region golfers competed with their counterparts from the 11th and 12th regions. Each region sent a team champion and runner-up along with 10 individual qualifiers to their respective State First Round sites.
The top three teams and top 15 individual qualifiers at each site advanced to next week’s Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Girls Golf State Championship Final Rounds to be held Oct. 7-8 at Bowling Green Country Club. Monday’s scores do not carry forward.
Singh turned in the only score under par with her 2-under on the Winchester course’s 5,640-yard, par 72 layout. She bogeyed the first and 13th holes and birdied Nos. 2, 3, 9 and 12.
Frederick Douglass’ Willa Borough placed second with a 1-over round. All three Broncos golfers in action Monday advanced to Bowling Green as Izzy Newland (+7) and Candice Tanmas (+9) also made the cut.
Lexington Catholic will send three on as well, with Georgia Scott (+5) and Ellie Fightmaster (+11) joining Haddix.
In the team competition, 9th Region champion Lexington Christian continued to dominate with a four-player combined score of 16-over that included three top 10 finishers: Grace Soale (+2) tied for third, Carter Lankford (+3) finished sixth and Caroline Lankford (+4) finished seventh. Piper Dunn (+7) tied for 13th.
Although the score of LCA’s fifth golfer, Elle Chamberland (+11) didn’t count toward the team total, it would have still been good enough to make the cut if she were an individual qualifier, an indication of just how strong the Eagles’ team is.
Madison Central (+23) and Montgomery County (+53) will also advance their five-golfer teams to Bowling Green. The Indians were led by Rosie Patterson (+2), who finished in a tie for third in the individual standings along with Soale and Corbin’s Makena Myatt.
