Several students were injured after a railing collapsed on a section of bleachers at a high school soccer game Thursday night.

It happened at the 7th Region semifinal game between St. Xavier and Trinity, hosted at Waggener High School in Louisville. St. X defeated Trinity in a penalty-kick shootout.

After scoring the winning penalty kick, St. X players ran toward the student section to celebrate the victory. A video posted by Kent Taylor, WLKY sports director, showed a few St. X players hanging from the railing before it collapsed, sending the railing and several students crashing to the ground.

At least five students were injured in the incident, according to the Louisville Courier Journal. Among the injured were two St. X soccer players and a linebacker on the school’s football team.

Waggener’s stadium recently underwent renovations but reopened Sept. 8, according to the Courier Journal. The bleachers were deemed compliant after an inspection by the Construction Review Division of Louisville’s Department of Codes and Regulations three days before it hosted its first game, according to Carolyn Callahan, a spokesperson for Jefferson County Public Schools.

A structural engineer checked the damage on Friday and crews inspected all the newly installed bleachers, Callahan said.

Officials are working on a timeline for the repairs at Waggener, Callahan said.

The 7th Region boys and girls soccer championship games have been moved to Ballard High School, according to the Courier Journal. The games will take place Saturday.
