Lexington Christian defeated Monroe County 48-34 on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the girls All “A” Classic for the first time since 2011, but it’ll have to make a return trip to Owensboro next Sunday, because the finishing rounds of this week’s small-school state tournament have been postponed due to the winter storm warning in Kentucky.

Senior guard Piper Graham led the Eagles with 16 points and LCA got a career-high 15 points off the bench from eighth grader Somer Du Toit.

Despite two seniors falling slightly ill as they woke up Friday morning, LCA outscored Monroe 32-15 over the middle two quarters and led by as many as 19 points early in the fourth.

“Two of our seniors were sick, but they pushed through, and then we had young kids that were able to step up and hit some shots,” LCA coach Tim Bradshaw said. “Our defense is really what it was. We were able to get some stops and limit their transition stuff. That was a big key for us.”

Jentry Bertram, LCA’s all-time leading rebounder, played nearly the entire game despite not feeling quite herself. She grabbed just four boards and failed to score, but managed a team-high six assists.

Next, LCA will face Covington Holy Cross at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 1. The Indians are ranked No. 15 in the latest Kentucky Media Elite 16 girls basketball poll and were a 59-47 winner over Lyon County in Friday’s last quarterfinal at the Owensboro Sportscenter.

The other semifinal between hometown Owensboro Catholic and No. 16 Bishop Brossart will tip off at 8 a.m. on Feb. 1. The final will be at 3 p.m. the same day.

LCA won three straight girls All “A” Classics from 2007 to 2009 in an era the Eagles ranked as one of the best teams, regardless of size, in Kentucky. LCA won its only Girls’ Sweet 16 state championship in 2007.

LCA boys ousted on last-second shot

Newport’s Amontae Lowe split a pair of Lexington Christian defenders at half court and drove down the right block for a running, underhanded scoop shot at the buzzer to give the Wildcats a 45-43 win in Thursday’s first round of the boys All “A” Classic at the Owensboro Sportscenter.

The game featured seven ties and 13 lead changes. LCA led 36-32 going into the fourth quarter. Lowe’s game winner mirrored how LCA had defeated Sayre last Saturday to earn its small-school state tournament berth.

Lowe led Newport with 20 points. Caleb Marshall paced LCA with 16 points.

All of Friday’s boys All “A” Classic quarterfinals were moved up by two hours to help teams beat the forecasted snowstorm home. Like the girls tournament, the boys semifinals and finals have been postponed until Feb. 1.
