2026 Boys’ Sweet 16: A glance at every team and picks for who could win it all
The 2026 UK HealthCare Boys’ Basketball Sweet 16 state tournament tips off Wednesday morning at Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington and it does so with a matchup that could have been for the state title if not for the nature of the event’s random draw.
No. 2 Covington Catholic takes on No. 3 St. Xavier at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the first round.
Eight teams in this week’s field were ranked in the final Kentucky Media Elite 16 poll of the season. The others ranked teams, like No. 1 Madison Central, did not survive their highly competitive region tournaments.
The field also includes teams representing the last four state title holders, In order from 2022 they are George Rogers Clark, Warren Central, Lyon County and Great Crossing.
And there are seven Mr. Basketball finalists present this week, chosen by members of the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches as their respective region players of the year. The Mr. Basketball award for the state’s most outstanding senior will be announced at a banquet at Lexington’s Griffin Gate Marriott on Sunday.
Those finalists are listed below, along with the Herald-Leader’s preseason coaches’ poll rankings, the final Kentucky Media Elite 16 rankings of the regular season and the KHSAA’s RPI Standings, which is also an end-of-regular-season list. Be aware that the formula for RPI often doesn’t reflect every team’s strength of schedule, especially if they’ve played a few out-of-state teams.
So who made it through? Here’s a glance at all 16 region champions, who they’ve beaten, who’s beaten them, some stats and notes about each, plus my predictions for what will happen this week. In the notable wins and losses categories, the rankings are from the final Elite 16 poll.
