11th Region softball tournament to take place at George Rogers Clark High School
Due to concerns about rain expected early this week, the 11th Region Softball Tournament has been moved to the turf field at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester instead of its planned placement at Eastern Kentucky University’s Gertrude Hood Field in Richmond.
The 11th Region’s tournament play begins at 10 a.m. Monday when 43rd District champion Lafayette (17-12) takes on 41st District runner-up Great Crossing (17-12).
That’s the first of four Memorial Day games featuring the champions and runners-up from the 41st, 42nd, 43rd and 44th districts.
Bryan Station (13-14), who stunned top-seeded Scott County in the 42nd District final on Wednesday, will take on 43rd District runner-up Tates Creek (16-10) in the final first round game of the day at 4 p.m.
The Commodores topped Bryan Station 13-4 on April 27, but none of those runs came against the Defenders’ normal everyday starter, Karsyn Rockvoan, a senior who ranks among the top strikeout pitchers in the state.
Rockvoan’s 265 strikeouts rank seventh statewide. No. 13 Madison Central’s Kate Drury ranks next best in the region with 217. Drury rates as the region’s best in earned run average (1.50) and wins (17).
Madison Central (23-8), the 44th District champion, is the only team ranked in the final Kentucky Prep Softball coaches poll top 25 of the regular season. The Indians will face Scott County (17-12) at noon.
Franklin County (20-9), the 41st District champion, takes on 44th District runner-up Madison Southern (13-13) at 2 p.m.
The venue change to a different neutral site was made late Sunday afternoon. The draw was held at Great Crossing High School on Friday.
Great Crossing athletic director Austin Haywood, whose school is managing the event, confirmed concerns about weather delays prompted the move. Clark has an all-turf infield and outfield, which means the field can be ready for play more quickly between rain delays. Clark plays in the 10th Region. Its tournament is being held at Bracken County.
