Clinging to a one-run lead with Franklin County’s most dangerous hitters due up over the last two innings on Friday night in the 11th Region Softball Tournament semifinals, Bryan Station needed one of senior pitcher Karsyn Rockvoan’s best performances.

With yet another historic milestone for the program at stake in the school’s first region softball semifinals appearance, Rockvoan set a new career high for herself, recording her 295th strikeout of the season on the way to sealing a 1-0 victory at George Rogers High School.

She “owned that mound,” Bryan Station coach Hector Urbaneja said of Rockvoan, who doesn’t get the advantage of throwing downhill from a mound like the boys do, but does OK without.

“Whenever I was warming up, I was trying to make sure I hit my spots, that I had good movement on the ball, and just keeping that confidence and building it up throughout the game,” Rockvoan said.

Bryan Station now has a five-game win streak heading into the first region championship game ever.

“We have each other’s backs. We found a way to stick together, and it’s come together, we’re making history,” Urbaneja said.

Rockvoan stats showed obvious benefits from the extra two days of rest brought by this week’s weather delays. On Monday, she struck out 16 batters and walked nine. On Thursday, she walked one.

The last four of Rockvoan’s 14 strikeouts Thursday came against three of Franklin County’s top four home run threats, including Camryn Kelly, who launched two of her 15 on the season in Monday’s 9-3 win over Madison Southern in the first round.

Rockvoan allowed only two hits Thursday, but two bunts, one a bloop by Kaitlyn Kennedy over Rockvoan’s head in the sixth inning, created the Flyers’ biggest threat.

Another bunt by Madison McCoy got Kennedy to second. A wild pitch put the potential tying run at third base. Next at the plate, Emma Olds had a .439 average and seven homers for the Flyers. Rockvoan struck her out swinging to end the threat.

From there, Rockvoan struck out the side in the seventh inning to end the game — Kelly swinging, Rosie Landers (seven homers), swinging, and Aaliyah Tillman (one homer), swinging.

Though Bryan Station’s postseason win streak has included breakout innings of five or more runs each game, base-running miscues cost them against the Flyers (21-10).

Adrienn Arcure got thrown out at the plate in the third inning after her one-out single was followed with another by Mia Urbaneja moments later.

Arcure made up for it in the fifth inning with an RBI double into the left field corner that scored Bekah Clark. Arcure got tagged out at third base trying to stretch her hit into a triple.

But Bryan Station had the run it needed.

Arcure, a junior shortstop who plays with a soft brace on her right knee and a constant wrap on her throwing arm, went 3 for 3 as Bryan Station’s leadoff hitter. Arcure cherishes the history Bryan Station has been making as it’s improved its record to 15-14 and made its deepest playoff run.

“It means everything literally,” Arcure said. “We’ve worked so hard to get here, the practice hours, and more. This is one of the biggest moments in history for our school.”

Next, the Defenders face Madison Central at noon Saturday at Clark for the 11th Region championship.

The Indians were ranked No. 13 in the final Kentucky Prep Softball Coaches Poll and defeated the Defenders 4-2 in nine innings in their regular season meeting on March 24.

Rockvoan struck out 15 batters that game, but got upstaged by Madison Central pitcher Kate Drury’s 20.

Parks went 3 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Indians. Kate Drury had a pair of hits and an RBI to go with her four-hit shutout in the circle. Drury struck out 10. Kaylee Rice added a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored.
