No. 1 Covington Catholic 65, No. 18 Madison Central 63: AJ Mayer led four Colonels starters in double figures with 16 points as the state’s top-ranked team held on for a win in Richmond. Cole VonHandorf added 14 points for Catholic, which won its 12th straight game.
CJ Fredrick scored 13 and Andy Flood had 12 in the Colonel’s balanced attack, which Coach Scott Ruthsatz called a region-like environment.
“Sometimes you need these wake-up calls,” Ruthsatz said. “ ... With this young group you’ve really got to reemphasize the basics.”
Madison Central trailed by as many as 11 before climbing back into the game by employing an all-guard rotation. A series of three-pointers and and-one opportunities culminated in a trio of free-throw attempts by Grant Brockman with 15.3 seconds left that could have tied the game. He hit the first two but the third rolled out.
“After he hit his first two I just knew for sure he was gonna hit that third one,” Madison Central Coach Allen Feldhaus said. “ ... We’ve been in so many close games here lately that our kids really thought they were gonna win. They just don’t back down.”
No. 19 Lafayette 54, Boyle County 53: Harrison Lane’s three-pointer with 23 seconds left proved to be the difference as the Generals rallied past the Rebels by outscoring them 19-7 in the fourth quarter. Lafayette had to overcome a triple-double by Boyle’s Colton Elkins, who had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Ross Jenkins led the Generals with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Lane finished with nine points.
Wayne County 73, No. 13 Lexington Catholic 72: Trey Blevins hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds left that proved to be the game-winner for the Cardinals in Monticello. Blevins finished with 24 points, including four threes, and Corey Stearns added 27 points, including five threes. Luke Johnson led the Knights with 32 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
Buckhorn 77, Sheldon Clark 48: Connor Hoskins triple-double in the Wildcats’ win included 28 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
Wolfe County 97, Lee County 75: Sophomore Deven Stone had 28 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in the Wolves’ win.
Pikeville 97, Johnson Central 92: The Panthers had three players top 20 points in a surprise win over the Golden Eagles. Wyatt Battaile led the way with 26 points (4-for-7 on threes), 13 rebounds and six assists. Cody Charles added 25 points and four assists and Clay Slone’s 23 points included him hitting seven of nine from long range. Mason Blair scored 32 for Johnson Central.
Louisville Trinity: The fifth-ranked Shamrocks’ Lukas Burkman will miss the rest of the season with a right foot injury, LouisvilleCatholicSports.com reported. Burkman was third on team in scoring (11.0 per game) and first in three-pointers per game (2.3). He was 61-for-136 from long range (44.9 percent).
Girls’ high school basketball
No. 12 Sacred Heart 63, No. 21 Bullitt East 54: Down 10 to start the fourth, the Valkyries outscored the Chargers 23-6 in the quarter. Ashlee Harris scored seven of her game-high 19 points in the fourth. Bullitt East’s Lindsey Duvall, who has committed to play for Kentucky, had 16 points and six rebounds.
No. 2 Elizabethtown 74, Muhlenberg County 32: Miss Basketball candidate Erin Boley, a Notre Dame signee, scored 30 points and 11 rebounds in the Panthers’ win. Rachel Warden added 14 assists.
Scott County 82, Paul Dunbar 53: Bailey Hawkins was 5-for-8 from three-point range and finished with 25 points in the Cardinals’ win in Georgetown. Peyton Riddle added 16 points and seven assists for Scott County, and Mashayla Cecil had 26 points for the Bulldogs.
No. 24 East Carter 66, Bath County 39: Junior Kristen Mayo scored 18 and became the Raiders’ all-time leading scorer with 1,852 points.
