Tates Creek earns its first sweep of Fayette County Championships
Tates Creek’s boys ran away with a first-place finish at the Fayette County Championships Tuesday evening at Henry Clay, defeating Bryan Station 188.5 to 141.
The girls’ victory was a bit more of a nail-biter, but the Commodores came away with their first win in city meet history (the boys’ first was last season). They prevailed over Bryan Station 190-174.
Those results gave the Commodores their first-ever sweep in the 14-year history of the city meet, a nice feather in their cap heading into the Class 3A, Region 6 meet, which they’ll host on May 14.
“This is step one of three,” Tates Creek Coach Chris Hawboldt said. “We’ve got a region championship to go after next week and a state championship to go after after that.”
Robbie Lofton, a senior who sprints and owned the season’s top long-jump mark coming into the meet, was out with an ankle injury for Tates Creek. He was one of several key contributors from city schools — Bryan Station’s Brooke Raglin, Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Will Allen and Henry Clay’s Davonte Robinson, to name a few — who sat out the meet.
Raglin has missed much of the season with a right hamstring injury, but she’ll race in next week’s regional. Allen opted to rest while Robinson is out for the rest of the season to rehab a lingering leg injury.
Bryan Station Coach Kathy Broadnax was happy with her team’s overall performance Tuesday.
“This meet is still just about getting ready for the race at the end,” Broadnax said. “I had my girls and boys in different events and was really kind of testing where we were. I’m really proud.”
Lofton’s state-best mark fell to Henry Clay’s Jaron Brooks, an Auburn signee who recorded a mark of 23-1.75 to set a personal record in the long jump. It was the first time he did the event this season.
“I got (my PR) by three inches I think,” said Brooks, who sat out of the high jump, his best event. “I just kind of tackled it real hard today cause I haven’t done this all year.”
Bryan Station’s Isaiah McCall ran the 300-meter hurdles in 37.48 seconds, topping his previous best time by .25. He ran a 37.73 at the Eastern Relays on Saturday.
Both Tates Creek teams started off with a bang. The girls defeated Henry Clay by about 20 seconds in the 4x800-meter relay and the boys replicated that effort against their Blue Devil counterparts. The final times by both teams nearly topped school records.
The boys pulled away in the standings early, but the girls traded the lead with Bryan Station for most of the night. A win by freshman Emma Wells in the 3,200 meters and 4x400-meter relay victory helped Tates Creek shake the Defenders.
Tyanne Bentley had a big day for the Tates Creek girls. The senior defeated teammate Rosalynd Hollingsworth by .08 seconds in the 100 meters. She followed that up with a win in the 200 meters and was part of the Commodores’ winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
“She had four first-places today,” Hawboldt said. “That’s huge for her. She’s got a lot going on in her life right now and for her to win something like this, I love that. I love that she gets to be a part of that. ...”
“ ... We’ve got a lot of people that have been doing this a lot longer than I have that finally get to be a part of something that’s special. Step one taken. Now we’ve gotta go out and get better.”
