By Monday afternoon, two of the most well-regarded baseball teams in the entire state won’t be playing anymore.

One of them — Tates Creek, ranked fifth in the state by Prep Baseball Report — got knocked out in the first round of the 43rd District tournament. Either Madison Central (No. 4) or Lexington Catholic (No. 8) will join the Commodores in the bleachers a little after lunch time Monday; those teams meet each other in the first game of the 11th Region tournament at Lafayette.

At least one more top team in the region will pack up its gear for the final time this season on Monday. Henry Clay, ranked 24th, gets Lafayette in the first round.

The Generals, who fell just outside of the latest rankings, have hit their stride. They knocked off Creek and LexCath en route to their second straight 43rd District title last week. Last year Lafayette came into the 11th Region field ranked No. 2 in the state but ran into an upset-minded Sayre squad; the Generals will have the memory of that defeat as they play before a friendly crowd this week.

Henry Clay has lost three of four, including a 3-2 loss to Madison Central. The Blue Devils were runners-up in the 42nd District after a 13-5 loss to Scott County, their third to the Cardinals this season.

Scott County has won six of its last seven. The one loss over that stretch was to its first-round opponent, Franklin County. The Flyers fell to Western Hills in the 41st District championship and are 3-3 in their last six outings.

Western Hills and Madison Southern meet in the night cap on Monday. The teams split their two regular-season meetings.

The Wolverines started off their season with a four-game losing streak but put together a 12-game win streak in the middle of the season to help buoy their record to 25-9, giving the program its best single-season win total and its first 20-win season since 2010.

Every game of the tournament will air live on PrepSpin.com.
