Franklin County blanks Shelby Valley; Newport Central Catholic rolls over Scott
Franklin County hit the ground running in its season opener Saturday night, dominating both sides of the ball in a 55-0 blowout of host Shelby Valley.
Senior running back Denzel Vance set the tone in the first quarter, ripping off a 52-yard touchdown run on the Flyers’ first possession. He added a 7-yard score later in the quarter, finishing the night with 114 yards on eight carries.
Junior quarterback Jeremiah Green got in on the action as well. He completed just five of nine passes but three went for touchdowns. Green hit wide receiver Ameer Lee for scores of 53 and 24 yards and found Tre Simmons for another TD strike from 30 yards out. Green also rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown on four carries.
The Flyers put up 452 yards of total offense while holding Shelby Valley to just four yards, forcing seven punts.
Newport Central Catholic 47, Scott 21: Patrick Henschen kicked off his senior campaign with a bang, rushing for two touchdowns and passing for two more to lead the host Thoroughbreds past the Eagles. Henschen scored from 4 yards out to get NewCath on the board then scored on a 34-yard rush early in the second quarter. He rushed for 55 yards on eight carries.
Henschen and senior tight end Austin Neff hooked up for second-quarter scores of 68 and 32 yards, sending the Thoroughbreds to the locker room with a 33-7 halftime lead.
