The Kentucky High School Athletic Association on Wednesday finalized the dates for the boys’ and girls’ state basketball tournaments from 2019-2022 and awarded the site for the girls’ state tournament in 2021 and 2022.
Rupp Arena will host the girls’ Sweet Sixteen in 2021 and 2022. The KHSAA previously named Rupp Arena as the host of the girls’ tournament in 2019 and 2020; next season will be the first time the girls’ basketball state championship has been played in Lexington since 1932.
The Board of Control also finalized the dates for the state basketball tournaments from 2019-2022. As was the case up until a few years ago, which tournament is played first again will alternate beginning in 2019.
The boys’ Sweet Sixteen will be played March 6-10 in 2019 with the girls’ tournament to follow the next week from March 12-17.
In 2020 the girls’ tournament would be played first – March 11-15 – with the boys’ tournament to run from March 18-22.
The KHSAA previously voted to start the 2020-21 season one week early due to a scheduling conflict with Rupp Arena. The boys’ Sweet Sixteen will run from March 3-7 in 2021 with the girls’ tournament to go from March 10-14.
Scheduling will return to normal in the 2021-2022 season. The girls’ tournament will be held March 9-13 with the boys’ event to go from March 16-20.
The girls’ state tournament each of the next four seasons will be played the same week as the Southeastern Conference men’s basketball tournament. In 2021 both tournaments will conclude before the first week of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
The boys’ state tournament will be played at Rupp Arena through at least 2028.
