The Kentucky High School Athletic Association on Monday announced the first honorees of its "Triple Threat Award" program, a new initiative aimed at recognizing athletes who play sports for their school during each of the KHSAA's three seasons (fall/winter/spring).

KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett earlier this month co-authored an op-ed about the risks of sports specialization in young athletes. The Triple Threat Award is the latest effort by the KHSAA to help de-emphasize sports specialization.

A total of 1,814 athletes were recognized from 266 of the KHSAA's 280 member schools. Louisville Holy Cross, Onedia Baptist and Pikeville led the way with 22 honorees apiece.

The Kentucky Lion's Eye Foundation in the last five years has recognized a multi-sport male athlete as part of the Mr. and Miss Basketball Ceremony. Scott County's Cooper Robb — who plays football, basketball and baseball — was the 2018 winner.
