11 names you should know in 11th Region girls’ basketball this season

The 2019-20 Kentucky girls’ basketball season gets underway on Dec. 2. Here are 11 of the best players, in alphabetical order, playing for teams in the 11th Region this winter as put forth in a survey of region coaches.

Anaya Brown, Lafayette (So.): Brown, a 6-foot forward, averaged 7.9 points and 7.2 rebounds as a freshman. “Anaya can play any position on the floor from point to post,” said Coach Allison Tate Denton. “She is a huge asset to our team because of her versatility. We look to her to be one of our top rebounders as well.”

Elise Ellison Coons, Paul Laurence Dunbar (Jr.): Coons, a 5-11 guard, earned all-city, all-region and honorable mention all-state honors last season after averaging a team-high 17.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game as the Bulldogs won their second consecutive 43rd District title.

Samantha Cornelison, Madison Southern (Fr.): Cornelison, a 5-7 guard, led the team with 15.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and Coach Allie Turley expects more of the same from her versatile scorer, plus improvements to her defensive game.

Morgan DeFoor, Scott County (Sr.): DeFoor, a 5-6 shooting guard committed to Morehead State, averaged 16.1 points per game for the defending 11th Region champs and is hailed by Coach Steve Helton as “one of the most dynamic players in the state.”

Maddie Kauffman, Tates Creek (So.): Kauffman, a 5-6 “do it all quick combo guard,” according to Coach Matt Yates, comes over from Henry Clay where she averaged 5.7 points per game last year.

Patience Laster, Franklin County (So.): A 5-11 center/power forward, Laster established herself as a post presence averaging 10.5 points and 8.6 rebounds as a freshman. She’s “tough to guard in the post,” Coach Joey Thacker said, adding that she “runs the floor extremely well for her size.”

Jekauri McKeithen, Madison Central (Sr.): The Indians’ 6-foot center led the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.5 and 10.3 per game, respectively. “She has a motor that never stops,” said Coach Brad Lovely. “She will be a huge part of our team and how we play.”

Braylee McMath, Great Crossing (Jr.): McMath, a 5-1 point guard, comes over from Scott County where she averaged six points per game. “Braylee is an outstanding ball handler and can shoot the three very well,” Coach Glenn Wilson said. “She will be the key for our team.”

Brooklynn Miles, Franklin County (Jr.): Miles, a 5-6 guard who has a number of Division I offers, including one from Kentucky, averaged more than 20 points per game last year and has consistently improved her perimeter shot each season, Thacker said. Her speed and her ability to defend also make her one of the state’s top players.

Chloe Treece, Lexington Catholic (So.): Treece, a 5-11 guard, scored 11 points per game as a freshman. She and the Knights will get a stern test under new head coach Donald Tegt as they face Scott County on the road in their opener on Dec. 3.

Malea Williams, Scott County (Sr.): Williams, a 6-3 center, averaged a double-double last year and her blocking ability helped get the Cardinals their second consecutive 11th Region title. She made 63 percent of the shots she put up last season, the sixth-best field goal percentage in the state..
