High School Basketball

The girls’ Sweet 16 bracket is complete. See who’s coming to Rupp Arena this week.

The field is complete for the Mingua Beef Jerky/KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16 state high school basketball tournament, which will play out Wednesday, March 11 through Sunday, March 15 in Rupp Arena in Lexington.

Two region champions, the 3rd and 9th, were decided in games Sunday afternoon, and the other 14 spots were claimed Friday and Saturday.

Defending state champion Ryle defeated Notre Dame, 47-42, for the 9th Region crown at Northern Kentucky University. Defending region champion Owensboro Catholic held off Muhlenberg County, 53-49, Sunday for the 3rd Region title at the Sportscenter in Owensboro.

The Sweet 16 will have an almost entirely new look this season over last. Of the 16 entrants, only five made the tournament last year — Henderson County (2nd), Owensboro Catholic (3rd), Ryle (9th), Clark County (10th) and Pikeville (15th).

The other 11 contenders this year are Marshall County (1st), Bowling Green (4th), Elizabethtown (5th), Bullitt East (6th), Sacred Heart (7th), Anderson County (8th), Franklin County (11th), Casey County (12th), South Laurel (13th), Letcher County Central (14th) and Russell (16th).

Wednesday’s opening game, at noon, pits Elizabethtown (27-5) against Bullitt East (24-7).
