The field is set for the Boys’ Sweet 16. See who’s headed to Rupp Arena.
The field for the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16 state high school basketball tournament is set after the final 11 berths were claimed Tuesday night around Kentucky.
The 103rd edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place March 18-22 at Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington.
Six schools who played in last year’s Sweet Sixteen will be making return trips to Rupp Arena: Madisonville, Warren Central, Covington Catholic, Scott County, Knox Central and Ashland Blazer.
Not among that group is defending state champion Trinity, which was eliminated by archrival St. Xavier in the first round of the 7th Region Tournament. The 7th Region will be represented this season by Male, which defeated Ballard, 71-61, in Tuesday night’s championship game and will bring a 31-4 record to Rupp Arena.
The school with the best record in the field is undefeated Ashland Blazer (33-0). The Tomcats coasted through the 16th Region Tournament with wins of 61-41 over Russell, 67-39 over Rowan County and 84-60 Tuesday night over Lewis County. Ashland will face 5th Region champion Elizabethtown (27-3) on the opening day of the Sweet 16 at 1:30 p.m.
Scott County (19-16) will represent Central Kentucky’s 11th Region and will face 13th Region champion Knox Central (25-8) in its first game, also on Wednesday.
The Central Kentucky area will also be represented by 10th Region winner Clark County (28-7) and 12th Region champion West Jessamine (21-11).
